Mitigation measures can decrease the amount of damage that will be produced by an earthquake or other natural hazard event. Studies have documented that communities which adopted stronger building codes and land use plans experienced less damage after controlling for other factors. The policy component investigation of this project provides information to support the adoption of the nonstructural measures developed and tested in the engineering research and provide a solid foundation for the implementation of results. The HAZUS risk analysis software is utilized in the study.
