The cost and effort of collecting accurate inventory data has been a major obstacle to the widespread use of regional earthquake risk assessment methods to date. Shortcomings in inventory data are an important component of uncertainty in region loss estimates. This project seeks to develop new and advanced methods to produce regional inventories that will significantly improve accuracy, quantify the uncertainty and lower costs of conducting regional assessments. These techniques will make updates of inventories easier over time. Rather than labor intensive methods of manually counting buildings and facilities, this project models the inventory by combining existing databases, remote sensing and innovative spatial computing techniques.
