Project Title: Enhancement of GDOT’s Pavement Rehabilitation and Design Processes by Integrating New and Existing Data Sources and Developing Data Analysis and Reporting Procedures
Dr. Zhahoua Wang ‘s work is focused on improving asset management techniques and cost savings for federal and state highway agencies. In this project, Dr. Wang has developed new procedures and methods for data integration, and pavement analysis and reporting procedures for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). Dr. Wang has created a GPS-enabled wireless-camera-integrated handheld system to replace the existing paper-pencil method for field data collection. A centralized database was also created to store new and historical pavement evaluation data. And, a GIS-based web application, developed on ArcGIS server and ArcIMS, is currently being used by pavement design engineers to conduct spatial data queries, visualization, analyses, and reporting. Wang’s unique approach is helping enhance the pavement rehabilitation and design processes on Georgia’s 18,000-centerline-mile highway network by providing a comprehensive data-driven platform for GDOT to make efficient and informed decisions.
